Bouncy Dog Play

When two or more dogs play together, it’s important to watch the dogs in case playing turns into serious behavior. These two dogs in the video below are playing well together under the watchful eye of their owner and Lee county dog trainer, Helen Verte Schwarzmann, CTC.

One of the important qualities in good play in dogs and puppies is how they move when running. In this video, for the most part, Emilie the Dobiermann is running around the Everglades Palms on her well-plowed race track with such bouncy and puppylike movements that her ears bounce up and down in cuteness. That’s what we want to see when dogs are playing. Those bouncy, almost awkward strides that signal to the other dog or dogs involved in the game that it is indeed play. During any dog’s or puppy’s board-and-train at my location in Lee county, I’m always on the lookout for good play, and I love to record the play styles of dogs and puppies enrolled in my humane boot-camp board-and-train programs. There’s never a dull moment when a new pup or dog comes for Fort Myers dog training with me and my well-trained dogs.

If you’re watching your own dogs play, whether you’re observing dog behavior in Lee county, Florida, or another part of the world, watch out if dogs who are chasing become less bouncy and more full-on striding. Watch carefully that playing doesn’t become preying, especially if there is a descrepancy in sizes or ages like with these two. Dudley is a 9-year-old Australian Shepherd and about two-thirds the size of almost 2-year-old Dobermann Emilie, who loves to play, but sometimes doesn’t know her own force and power. Emilie ran into me once and I fell flat. She was too busy running with Bailey, her young Labrador Retriever friend who attended my humane boot camp here in the Fort Myers area for board-and-training. Bailey was especially well suited as a playmate to Emilie, who often gets into play so heavily that she doesn’t watch where she’s going, which was the case when she knocked me over.

Here’s the video of Doberman Emilie enticing Aussie Dudley to play, including jumping over each other and my 13-year-old granny dog who was merely lying in the shade, but soon turned into a hurdle in a makeshift agility course for my two very energetic dogs.
