If you are driving with your dog, it’s important that your dog doesn’t interfere with your concentration. Use either a seat belt for your dog,or if your dog is small enough, use a crate. When your dog’s in a crate, he can have a water bucket, so if thirsty, can get a drink. Keeping water available for your dog is important. And so is distraction-free driving.
Deputy Dave Passmore in this news report and video from KSL in Utah was hit head on by a driver who drifted over into his lane because she was distracted. On the video she cries, “I wasn’t trying to drift over into that lane.” Drivers on the whole don’t usually try to drift over into a lane of oncoming traffic. The police officer asks her what she was looking at. The answer? Her puppy.
Here is a video of Sammie, the 10-year-old Poodle I trained to get into his crate, enjoy his crate, and ride in it while the driver drives in the front seat. If you have a dog that’s small enough, a crate is an excellent resource for keeping you undistracted by your beloved dog while you drive the vehicle.
If you need help training your dog to love his crate during a car ride and/or to ride with a seat belt on, contact me for a board-and-train dog training package that includes pet-free distraction while driving. Stay safe.
