One of my board-and-trains who returns occasionally for boarding is Auggie. This fur kid is an energetic Schnauzer. He needs plenty of exercise, and lots of reminders of the rules from training. I train dogs to learn the rules, then I reinforce them for maintenance. I do this no matter if it’s their first time here or the fifth.
Auggie was super excited, and when we started to play, he swiped my arm hard unexpectedly. That stung!
After that, our daily ball playing sessions included reminders for Auggie to back off when I picked the ball up from the ground. He obliged quickly as the reward for his good behavior was my throwing the ball for him, which he loves.
Follow and enforce the humane training rules with dogs and they will put forth the good behavior to get what they want.
