Training Dogs With R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

What does an alligator training video, a video of polite poochies, and Fort Myers Board-and-Train Dog Training have in common?

One video demonstrates how well alligators can be trained via humane-based training. Yes, alligators. Positive reinforcement training is used to train alligators, from handling to eliciting sperm from the primitive beasts. And might you notice two things in particular. One happens towards the end of the video at 5-1/2 minutes. The alligators are lined up, the selected one has moved forward and the trainer drops the piece of meat to the right of the alligator in training. The meat is dropped right in front of the next alligator in line, who does not lunge or even make a move to that dropped meat. I bet many homes with two or more dogs would not have the same result with their own dogs. This is accomplished nicely through training with food.

The second thing in the alligator training video is something you’ll have to listen for. The trainer says that when a gator no longer wants to participate in the training, he can return to the water. There is no force to comply. If the reptile doesn’t feel like training, so be it. The gator may be having an off day, have had a feeling of insecurity, not be physically feeling well, whatever. If the animal decides it’s not right, then he’s free to disembark the training ship. Humane trainers accept this because there will always be the next session to pick up from and every animal has ups and downs. By giving the animal a choice to participate or not, we leave him in control of his actions, and we leave him emotionally sound about training. Force creates fear. Choice creates trust.

I train my Fort Myers board-and-train dogs in Lee county with the same respect. When a dog or puppy is in a training session, but isn’t revved up and ready to train, then we stop and go back to it later.

When Lee county, Fort Myers dogs, and dogs everywhere, are treated and trained humanely, they’ll offer good behaviors in hopes that good things happen in return.

My dogs lined up in this video just like the alligators lined up in the video above, with high hopes that something good would happen, training food, for example. Conversely, dogs who are trained with punishment will not run up to a trainer in hopes of getting choked, pronged, or shocked. Training humanely is more effective in creating a dog who loves to work for the possibilities of what wonderful things might come their way.

The answer to the question I posed above with regards to what the alligator and dog training videos have in common with Fort Myers board-and-train dog training? Outsmarting Dogs board-and-train dog training in Lee county uses the same humane, respectful dog training methods derived from behavioral science to train our dogs and our clients’ dogs and puppies as Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo uses to train its 400-750 pound gators.
